Erin Louise Jones Obituary: Grand Rapids Woman Among Four Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on U.S. 131
ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI – Authorities have released the identities of the victims in a fatal wrong-way crash that took place early Sunday, November 2, on U.S. 131 in Allegan County. The tragic collision claimed the lives of four individuals, including 38-year-old Erin Louise Jones of Grand Rapids, and left two others with serious injuries.
Details of the Tragic Accident
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred in the early morning hours when a Subaru Legacy, driven by Erin Jones, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 131 after a wrong-way entry onto the highway.
Investigators reported that Jones had initially been driving south on U.S. 131 before exiting at 129th Avenue. Afterward, she entered the northbound on-ramp and made a U-turn at the bottom of the ramp, causing her vehicle to continue traveling south in the wrong direction.
Moments later, her Subaru collided head-on with a Ford Fusion carrying five occupants who were traveling correctly in the northbound lanes.
Multiple Fatalities and Serious Injuries
The collision was described as catastrophic. Both drivers — Erin Louise Jones, 38, of Grand Rapids, and Emmanuel Browning, 18, of Kalamazoo, who was driving the Ford Fusion — were pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old front-seat passenger in the Fusion also died from the impact.
On Tuesday, officials confirmed that a fourth victim, a 17-year-old girl from the Portage area, later died from her injuries at the hospital. Due to their age and privacy requests from their families, authorities have not released the names of the juvenile victims.
Two additional passengers from the Ford Fusion suffered serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their current medical conditions have not been disclosed.
Investigation Ongoing
The Allegan County Crash Reconstruction Team is continuing its investigation to determine what led to the fatal wrong-way entry. Lt. Brandon Berens noted that it could take several weeks before a complete report is finalized.
Authorities have not yet established why Jones entered the wrong side of the highway. The Sheriff’s Office added that no further details or names will be released at this time, in respect for the grieving families.
